Australasian Grebe

Tachybaptus novaehollandiae

This little fellow lives wholly on the water. You won’t see them come ashore especially during the day. They will pop under water and stay there a while if you walk past and startle them. (They are easily startled). They make flimsy nests on the water and have a few clutches of babies per season.

They can often be heard  making a trill type noise at night. They carry their babies on their back and under their wings when they are first born.
