Fountains

There are currently two water fountains in the middle of the lake. Once upon a time there were actually three (or possibly 5). All but two were shut down. The local residents feel that if a third was reactivated it would make a big difference towards inhibiting the current excessive algae growth.

There are also several sub marine or Lake Bed Aerators in the lake that can be seen bubbling up from time to time.

The fountains go on automatically at 8:00 am and turn off automatically at 5:00 pm. Sometimes if there is a power outage, the timer gets messed up and needs to be reset. A quick phone call to the Rockingham City Council will sort it out.

Further Information

Lake fountains help  in a number of ways including: aesthetic beauty, pest control, algae control, and the other benefits of aeration systems.

They can help the lake by keeping the water moving constantly and adding more oxygen into the water, just like an aerator would do. However, a lake fountain both aerates and looks beautiful at the same time.

These lake fountains are not just for good looks, they can also keep those pesky mosquitoes out of your summer fun. Mosquitoes like to nest in still and calm waters, and lake fountains keep them from nesting because of the movement of water. Lake fountains also keep your lake clean because the movement of the water works the same way on lake algae as well!

Movement of water and proper aeration is essential for the health of the lake.

Aeration can:
  •  Increase oxygenation in the pond.
    • Surface agitation and wave action increases the surface area of a pond increasing the oxygen absorption rate.
  • Create surface movement and agitation.
    •  Inhibits stagnant surface water.
    •  Decreases mosquito nesting habitat.
    •  Limits algal growth.
  • Destratify the water column.
    • Ponds stratify in the summer resulting in only a thin layer of oxygenated water at the surface of a pond while the lower portions of the pond become anaerobic, septic, and unsuitable for aquatic life.
    • Increase healthy bacteria and enzyme activity.
    • Assist in the reduction of sludge through microbial activity, eliminate the smells associated with decaying matter on the bottom of ponds, and promote a healthier fishery throughout the entire water column.

  • Reduce the amount of available phosphorous.
    •  In the presence of oxygen, phosphorus (a limiting nutrient in aquatic plant and algae growth) becomes unavailable
