Ship of Lights

Light Ship

On a Friday and Saturday night you may be able to see this “Ship of lights” reflecting off the water from one of the residents houses. An echo from time when the big ships came up Peel Harbour to load timber?

The lights go on at sunset and go off about 9:30pm – 10:00pm

The best vantage point is from the West, North West, side, North of the main reserve entrance sign.

Island

There is a man made island  on the East side of the lake where many birds take refuge and nest. Apparently when it was first built it was too close to the edge of the lake and you could walk over to it in summer so they had to move it.

Also of interest is the fact that at one stage the shrubs on the island had grown so tall that so many Shags (Cormorants) came to roost at night and made an unbearable smelly mess with their droppings “Guano”.  The trees and shrubs were cut right down to prevent large numbers of them roosting there at night. Some of them now roost in the trees at the south end of the lake at night.
